1961年12月19日是夫人江冬秀的生日，還在住院的胡適一早見到秘書王志維就對他說：「今天是我太太的生日，你要買一件好禮物代我送去。」經商量後，推請徐秋皎去購買了一隻養珠手鐲和一對耳環，胡適看了禮物後相當滿意。除此之外又包了一個紅包，內裝美金百元，讓偶打麻將的太太多些錢玩玩，並於病床上用鋼筆寫在紅包上寫下：「冬秀百百歲」。
