“What is the meaning of life? That was all- a simple question; one that tended to close in on one with years, the great revelation had never come. The great revelation perhaps never did come. Instead, there were little daily miracles, illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark; here was one.”
― from TO THE LIGHTHOUSE By Virginia Woolf, 1927

His breakfast cuisine catapulted Australian cafe culture to international acclaim, although some saw his best-known dish as an example of millennial excess.

Don't wait for inspiration. It comes while working' - Henri Matisse, born on New Year's Eve in 1869.
Matisse loved making art, but when he was in his 60s, his health made it difficult for him to continue painting. Instead he started to create colourful collage works known as 'gouaches découpées', made by cutting or tearing paper.
One person who witnessed Henri Matisse in action was his assistant Jacqueline Duhême, who, as a twenty-year-old aspiring artist, would spend two years working with Matisse: 'He was an enormous help to me, not only in progressing my drawing, but also psychologically. He was a great man, yet very demanding with others and with himself, so I learned both the rigour and difficulties of work, and also its joys.'

Edward R. Murrow(1908~1965) 二戰倫敦,轟炸中主持廣播,節目結語,總是:‘’Good Night, Good luck. ‘’
Murrow achieved celebrity status as a result of his war reports. They led to his second famous catchphrase, at the end of 1940, with every night's German bombing raid, Londoners who might not necessarily see each other the next morning often closed their conversations with "good night, and good luck." The future British monarch, Princess Elizabeth, said as much to the Western world in a live radio address at the end of the year, when she said "good night, and good luck to you all". So, at the end of one 1940 broadcast, Murrow ended his segment with "Good night, and good luck." Speech teacher Anderson insisted he stick with it, and another Murrow catchphrase was born.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Brazilian Portuguese:[ˈɛtsõaˈɾɐ̃tʃizdunasiˈmẽtu]; 23 October 1940 – 29 December 2022), better known by his nickname Pelé (Portuguese pronunciation:[peˈlɛ]), was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a forward. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all-time, he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century.[2][3]

Barbra Streisand didn’t want to write her new book, she insists in its introduction. She’s really a very private person. But, after decades of being in the public eye, she writes, there’s so much untruth about her, and she can’t trust anyone else to correct it. Her 992-page memoir, “My Name Is Barbra,” sets the record straight, giving Streisand not only the last word, but “the most words, and also the most true ones,” Rachel Syme writes. Marvelous news! Andrew Pettegree is now CBE, a most-deserved hono(u)r. Andrew is the dean of book historians, a brilliant & terribly generous scholar. I have a shelf dedicated to his books I have devoured. He also created ustc.ac.uk, which has the hubris to catalog all print from 1450 to 1700. An amazing friend and Commander.

The photographer Deanna Dikeman’s parents always stood outside to send her off after a visit, waving or standing in the driveway while she got in her car and drove away. One day in 1991, she thought to photograph them in this pose, and for more than 20 years, she continued the practice—photographing her parents at the same moment, rolling down her car window and aiming her lens toward their home. "To the Lighthouse" is actually a novel written by Virginia Woolf, and it's considered one of her most famous works. The novel is known for its stream-of-consciousness narrative style and its exploration of the inner thoughts and emotions of its characters. The story primarily revolves around the Ramsay family and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland.
Main Characters:
1. Mr. Ramsay - He is a philosopher and the head of the Ramsay family. Mr. Ramsay is characterized by his intellectual pursuits and his desire for recognition in his field.
2. Mrs. Ramsay - She is the matriarch of the family and serves as a loving and nurturing figure. Mrs. Ramsay's character embodies traditional gender roles of the time, as she cares for her children and supports her husband's work.
3. James Ramsay - The youngest son of the Ramsay family, James is struggling with his own emotions and a strained relationship with his father. His journey of self-discovery is a central theme in the novel.
4. Lily Briscoe - She is a close friend of the Ramsays and is a painter. Lily's artistic aspirations and her relationship with her art are significant elements of the story.
5. Charles Tansley - He is a student and one of Mr. Ramsay's proteges. Tansley's presence in the Ramsay household adds an element of tension and class dynamics.
Analysis:
"The Lighthouse" is renowned for its introspective exploration of its characters' inner lives and the passage of time. It delves into themes of human connection, the pursuit of meaning, and the complex dynamics within families and relationships. Woolf's use of the stream-of-consciousness narrative technique allows readers to experience the characters' thoughts and emotions intimately, offering a deep psychological insight.
The novel is also known for its experimental structure, as it lacks a traditional plot and instead presents a series of moments and memories. The lighthouse itself becomes a symbol of unattainable goals and the passage of time.
Woolf's prose is poetic and often introspective, making the novel a rich and immersive reading experience. "The Lighthouse" is considered a landmark in modernist literature and continues to be studied and appreciated for its innovative narrative style and deep exploration of the human psyche.
In a British Town, a New Way of Caring for Older People Is Bringing Hope
An “integrated care center” brings doctors, physiotherapists, social workers and pharmacists under one roof. It won’t solve Britain’s underlying social care crisis — but it could help.
