如果我們可以重新站在十九世紀末的巴黎街頭，那個屬於巴爾札克、普魯斯特、福樓拜、波特萊爾的巴黎美好時代，如果我們又重新觸摸得到、聞嗅得到、看得到那個時代的美好巴黎，那會是多麼美好的一次閱讀經驗。
十九世紀末的巴黎，是當時歐洲文化的發動點，藝術和時尚的集中地，各式各樣有才華的人向巴黎集中，工藝的價值尚未被摒棄，而工業革命帶來的的便利剛剛嶄露頭角。當時所遺留下來的圖像、建築物、文字資料，對事物的觀念，至今都一直影響著我們，並成為我們今日文化發展的基石。
本書以拱廊街、聲音、味道、光線、馬車、照片、運動等平日較少被人討論，卻又最為切身的主題作為關鍵字對十九世紀末的巴黎進行論述，這些經過確實研究和調 查後所得到的事實，經過作者帶著深刻感受力的文字描述，讓展示櫥窗深處的寂靜、忽然飄出的香氣，浮現在照片上的模糊人影，瞬間的接觸開啟了通往過去時光的 入口，不知不覺地重新連接起我們和十九世紀人們之間的時間裂縫。

以張旭東等2人譯《發達資本主義時代的抒情詩人》為最先 (1989)，可能翻譯自法文，2010年有台灣版；接下來是《發達資本主義時代的抒情詩人》王才勇譯，南京：江蘇人民，2005，翻義自德文本；2006年，《巴黎，19世紀的首都 》劉北城譯 (2013年新版)，翻譯自英文本。
就某些單字，譬如說，《巴黎，19世紀的首都(1935年提綱) 》很前面的 marble-paneled，2本《發達資本主義時代的抒情詩人》都翻譯成大理石地板。只有劉北城譯的"用大理石做護牆板" (p.4) 比較正確。
