4月16日，是喜劇泰斗卓別林的生日。
1931年，他與天才物理學家愛因斯坦，留下這張合影。領域不相干的兩人一見如故，開啟一生友誼。
《城市之光》電影於美國洛杉磯首映，卓別林邀請了愛因斯坦。卓別林在《我的自傳》裡提及這段往事。電影落幕時，他發現愛因斯坦擦拭眼角的淚。
後來，愛因斯坦寫信給卓別林：
「對於你的表演藝術，我最欽佩的是它的普世性。你一句話也沒講，而全世界都懂得你。」What I admire the most about your art is your universality. You don’t say a word, yet the world understands you!
對此，卓別林回信：「但你的榮耀更偉大！全世界都欽佩你，即便沒有人懂得你。」
It’s true, but your glory is even greater! The whole world admires you, when nobody understands you."
這二位改變世界的大師級人物的對話，令人拍案。

The fact that the young, beautiful Terry finds life meaningless provides endless opportunities for neo-Schopenhauerian11 posing and posturing on Calvero’s part, delivered with limitless self-satisfaction on Chaplin’s part: “Life is not a meaning, child! Life is a desire! It’s what makes a rose want to be a rose, and a rock want to be a rock!” His imitations of a rose wanting to be a rose and a rock wanting to be rock don’t thrill me, but Terry naturally finds them enchanting.
There are those who will easily read into it a veiled biography of Mr. Chaplin himself, not to mention a pretty full expression of his personal philosophies. There may be some justification for this. One tangible weakness of the film is the garrulous discussion of human foibles and paradoxes that Mr. Chaplin permits himself.But, within the two hours and fifteen minutes that the picture eventually runs, he also gives a full measure of inspired Chaplin comedy. By various devices, he gets into, first, one hilarious routine in which he plays a commanding flea-trainer, dressed up in a ring-master's duds, and then a rollicking music hall nonsense to "Oh, For the Life of a Sardine." Best of his numbers, however, is a slam-bang burlesque pantomime of a violin-piano concert, with Buster Keaton as the accompanist on the keys.And certainly Mr. Chaplin's associates in this amiable enterprise contribute their comparable measure of artistry and charm to its success.

"Limelight" is not a great film. It is a genial and tender entertainment and a display of audacity and pride. There are those who will easily read into it a veiled biography of Mr. Chaplin himself, not to mention a pretty full expression of his personal philosophies.

故事發生在1914年的倫敦，於第一次世界大戰前夕。(1914年是卓別林第一次拍電影的年份) 。Calvero (由卓別林飾演)曾經是一位著名的小丑，但現在卻是一個醉鬼。他救了一名企圖自殺的年輕舞蹈員Thereza (別名是Terry，由克萊爾·布魯姆飾演)。
Calvero 令她的身體狀況轉好，並不斷地鼓勵她，可是他自己本身的恢復卻不甚成功。Terry終於都因此而能再次行走，她向Calvero表達了情意，更說她想嫁給他，而且並不介意他們之間的年齡差距，即使Calvero認為她曾經幫助過的作曲家Neville更加適合作她的伴侶。

Limelight is a 1952 comedy-drama film written, produced, directed by, and starring Charlie Chaplin, based on a novella by Chaplin titled Footlights.[3] The score was composed by Chaplin and arranged by Ray Rasch.
The film stars Chaplin as a washed-up comedian who saves a suicidal dancer, played by Claire Bloom, from killing herself, and both try to get through life; additional roles are provided by Nigel Bruce, Sydney Earl Chaplin, Wheeler Dryden, and Norman Lloyd, with an appearance from Buster Keaton. In dance scenes, Bloom is doubled by Melissa Hayden.
Upon the film's release, critics' reception was divided; it was heavily boycotted in the United States and failed commercially. However, the film was re-released in the United States in 1972, which included its first screening in Los Angeles. This allowed the decades-old film to be in contention for the 45th Academy Awards where Chaplin won his only competitive Oscar. Today, the film is sometimes regarded as one of Chaplin's best and most personal works, and has attained a cult following.
Plot[edit]
The movie is set in London in 1914, on the eve of World War I, and the year Chaplin made his first film. Calvero (Charlie Chaplin), once a famous stage clown, but now a washed-up drunk, saves a young dancer, Thereza "Terry" Ambrose (Claire Bloom), from a suicide attempt. Nursing her back to health, Calvero helps Terry regain her self-esteem and resume her dancing career. In doing so, he regains his own self-confidence, but an attempt to make a comeback is met with failure. Terry says she wants to marry Calvero despite their age difference; however, she has befriended Neville (Sydney Earl Chaplin), a young composer who Calvero believes would be better suited to her. In order to give them a chance, Calvero leaves home and becomes a street entertainer. Terry, now starring in her own show, eventually finds Calvero and persuades him to return to the stage for a benefit concert. Reunited with an old partner (Buster Keaton), Calvero gives a triumphant comeback performance. He suffers a heart attack during a routine, however, and dies in the wings while watching Terry, the second act on the bill, dance on stage.
