Today, we remember Paul Auster. A leading figure in his generation of postmodern American writers, his works include "The New York Trilogy and "4 3 2 1," and in 2015, he received the NAC Medal of Honor for achievements in literature. Throughout his more than 20 novels, Auster explored deeply philosophical themes of self, language, and fate while invoking the intricacies of New York City in a way that built it anew.

Paul Auster
Faber & Faber, Jun 2, 2011 - Biography & Autobiography - 724 pages

The celebrated author of The New York Trilogy, The Book of Illusions and Invisible presents here a highly personal collection of essays, prefaces and occasional pieces written for magazines and newspapers. Ranging in subject from Walter Raleigh to Kafka; Hawthorne to the high-wire artist Philippe Petit; conceptual artist Sophie Calle to Auster's own Olympia typewriter; the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers to his beloved New York City itself, Auster displays all his customary flair, wit and insight.
Including several of his major works - important books in their own right, such as Hand to Mouth and The Invention of Solitude - this collection demonstrates and reaffirms the pre-eminent position Paul Auster holds in contemporary literature and criticism.

The literary world has recently bid farewell to one of its most distinctive voices.

Paul Auster, an acclaimed author known for his deep, introspective works, passed away, leaving a legacy that will continue to influence and inspire readers for generations.

Born on February 3, 1947, in Newark, New Jersey, Auster graduated from Columbia University, where he developed a passion for writing. His journey as a writer was marked by a unique blend of existential inquiry, intricate narratives, and a profound understanding of the human condition.

Auster's body of work includes several standout titles. "The New York Trilogy" combines elements of detective fiction with philosophical questions, creating a complex narrative. "Moon Palace" tells the story of Marco Stanley Fogg, exploring personal and symbolic themes. "The Brooklyn Follies" offers a poignant look at post-9/11 New York and the power of relationships, while "The Invention of Solitude" reflects on the death of his father and broader philosophical musings on memory and identity. Get his stuff in the shop now. The dead write so much better than the living.

Auster's writing is known for its introspective nature and philosophical depth, often delving into themes of coincidence, identity, and existentialism. His prose is clear and precise, making complex themes accessible and emotionally resonant.

Beyond his novels, Auster was also a poet, essayist, and translator, influencing contemporary writers with his approach to narrative structure and existential themes. His work, translated into numerous languages, reaches a global audience and resonates universally.

Reflecting on Paul Auster's life and work, we are reminded of his profound impact on the literary world. His unique voice and thought-provoking stories have left an indelible mark.
