It took sometimes only a view of a window or a room’s interior for Pierre Bonnard to create profound imagery. His favorite model was his muse and wife Marthe, who can also be seen in this painting. She directs the viewer’s gaze away from the window and to herself, though her own face is turned away – a trick Bonnard employed often in his paintings. What she’s really doing is left to our imagination.
