The Alcoholic Empire examines the prevalence of alcohol in Russian social, economic, religious, and political life. Herlihy looks at how the state, the church, the military, doctors, lay societies, and the czar all tried to battle the problem of overconsumption of alcohol in the late imperial period. Since vodka produced essential government revenue and was a backbone of the state economy, many who fought for a sober Russia believed that the only way to save the country through Revolutionary change. This book traces temperance activity and politics side by side with the end of the tsarist regime, while showing how the problem of alcohoism continued to pervade Soviet and post-Soviet society. Illustrated by timeless and incisive sayings about the Russian love of vodka and by poster art and paintings, this book will appeal to Russian and European historians and those interested in temperance history.

今晚，附近有兩場活動，相衝突：李肇修教授的"全本巴哈無伴奏小提琴音樂會" (I) vs "大塊文化的野々村馨的《雲水一年》(吳繼文譯)新書發表"。
我採取"first come firse service"準則，去 "基泰台大鋼琴廳"---音樂門外漢，無法報告，只可保證肇修的"琴藝"日臻成熟，哈哈---在頂樓 (約第20層)看羅斯福路的"燈火通明行車如水"真有另一番滋味。我與肇修相約一月中旬再喝一杯！

鍾鈴英譯他集子的新詩。談趙的同學李祖原，我跟趙兄談許達然、李祖原當東海助教時。與許合住東海第7棟宿舍的故事。當然，我知道中研院統計所的建築，是由李所設計的。
趙兄念念不忘 text方面的data mining。
他認為，統計學在20世紀走入數學化，應該轉過來。

聖誕節近了，手中研究的這本傳記小說有段聖誕樹的記載，深得我心：

1847年，杜斯妥也夫斯基開始對空想社會主義感興趣，參加了彼得堡拉舍夫斯基小組的革命活動。同年果戈理發表《與友人書信選》別林斯基撰寫《給果戈理的一封信》對其觀點給予駁斥。杜斯妥也夫斯基非常喜歡別林斯基這篇文章，並尋找到手抄本在小組上朗讀。1849年4月23日他因牽涉反對沙皇的革命活動而被捕，並於11月16日執行死刑。在行刑之前的一刻才改判成了流放西伯利亞[1]。1850年1月23日，杜斯妥也夫斯基被押送至西伯利亞鄂木斯克軍事監獄，開始了四年的漫長苦役生涯。在西伯利亞他的思想發生了巨變，同時癲癇症發作的也愈發頻繁。他將服苦役期間的感受和見聞記在了《西伯利亞筆記》中，裡面的很多素材被寫進了《死屋手記》和其他作品中。1854年他被釋放，但是要求必須在西伯利亞服役。1858年他升為少尉，從此可以有自己的時間來思考與寫作。從假處決事件到西伯利亞服刑這十年時間是他人生主要的轉折，他開始反省自己，篤信宗教。也正是在在西伯利亞，他遇到了今後的妻子——瑪麗亞·伊薩耶夫（Maria D……

在305年，戴克里先五十五歲時，在經過長期的病困後，戴克里先選擇退休，居住在權力中心，濱臨亞得里亞海的索羅那附近的宮殿裡，並在該地實踐其最大的興趣——種捲心菜。在其後有人曾要求其重登帝位，卻被其斷然拒絕，並回覆道：「當閣下看對在下於索羅那親手栽種的蔬菜時，閣下便不會再提出這種要求。」是唯一一位自願放棄帝位與權力的羅馬皇帝；所有其他皇帝不是自然死亡，就是被人除去。

項羽と劉邦（連載時は「漢の風 楚の雨」、1980年6月 - 8月、新潮社）在日本賣出669万部。80年代初台灣就有些版本的翻譯。90年代須付版權，由台北的遠流出版公司發行。作者認為這是同一文化圈的英雄史詩，所以日本人也能感同身受。當然作者的另外5本維新群英小說中，有的賣出兩千多部。多少人讀過《史記》與.《漢書》的相關文章，不過無法如作者描寫漢王在逃難時，家人抓馬車的那些部位 (車輪上的橫木，上方為『較』，下方橫木為『式』，頁638)----現在英文儀表板dashboard 是19世紀汽車的擋泥板，而漢字中的車部首今人多很生疏了，蘇軾或蘇轍的意思…..。
另外，要找張小說中的地圖也不怎麼容易。
