He made his name with two of the biggest box-office hits of the 1970s. But despite some later successes, he never regained his early acclaim.

《大法師》（英語：The Exorcist）是一部1973年的美國恐怖電影，由威廉·弗萊德金導演，並且由威廉·彼得·布拉蒂根據其1971年的同名小說改編而成。此小說是受到1949年羅蘭·多伊驅魔事件^[3][4]的啟發而撰寫的，此事件涉及了一位被惡魔附身的12歲小女孩，求醫罔效後，她的母親不顧一切的嘗試拯救愛女，並由羅馬天主教會請來了兩位神父進行這次驅魔工作。

For all his groundbreaking work, Mr. Friedkin remained modest about it. “I don’t see myself as a pioneer,” he told The Independent in 2012. “I see myself as a working guy and that’s all, and that is enough.”
