自《忽必烈的獵豹》出版後，我們收到不少讀者詢問，中文書名是如何決定的？為什麼會從「大國」變「獵豹」？
因此這次邀請到本書編輯來與讀者分享取名原因，來看看翻譯時，編輯部的考量吧🔽
享譽世界漢學界的史學大家卜正民（Timothy Brook），他的新作Great State: China and the World，書名直譯為《大國：中國與世界》，
乍看之下，並不容易理解其中要義，而在缺乏背景知識的情況下，還可能會誤以為這是一本政治不正確、頌揚中國是「偉大國度」的作品。
當我們正為中譯本書名而苦惱時，注意到法文版的書名是：Le Léopard de Kubilai Khan（忽必烈的獵豹），讓人眼睛為之一亮。
繼其前作《塞爾登先生的中國地圖》、《維梅爾的帽子》，《忽必烈的獵豹》這個書名很有延續之感，且饒富興味，令人浮想連翩。
書中提到1280年時，宮廷畫家劉貫道奉命為忽必烈畫了一張有別於傳統的肖像畫〈元世祖出獵圖〉，這幅畫蘊含著忽必烈希望世人如何觀看他的涵義。
不同於以往正襟危坐、死氣沉沉的中國皇帝畫像，忽必烈特地要求畫師描繪他在打獵的肖像。當年，65歲的忽必烈已經不打獵了，但他喜歡想像自己置身獵場，而劉貫道因此照辦。
在這張出獵圖上，忽必烈置於畫的中心，眾獵手、妃子與宦官圍繞著他，呈現出他威風的英姿以及旺盛的統治企圖心，而「大國」（great state）觀亦自此成形，並深植中國，延續至今。
透過這個書名及這幅畫作，可以作為理解本書要旨的絕佳起點。
