On 21 August 1961, the National Gallery suffered its first art theft in 137 years. Overnight, and just 19 days after it was installed, a key portrait of Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) the Duke of Wellington, vanished. That the picture was on display at all was due to the Wolfson Foundation.

#OnThisDay in 1961, Goya's 'The Duke of Wellington' was stolen from the Gallery. The painting had only been on display at the Gallery since 2 August 1961, nineteen days prior to its theft. Here you can see the reward notice from the Metropolitan police, released in September 1961, and the ransom note from Kempton Bunton, postmarked 30 August 1961. 4 years later, the painting was returned to us. In July 1965 Bunton confessed that he took the Gallery’s newly-acquired painting and its frame. Come and get a closer look at the work in Room 45: https://bit.ly/3sp4xid
