America marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with solemn ceremonies given added poignancy by the recent chaotic withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and return to power of the Taliban.
Heart-wrenching commemorations will unfold at each of the three sites where 19 Al-Qaeda hijackers -- mostly from Saudi Arabia -- crashed packed airliners, striking the cultural, financial and political hearts of the United States and changing the world forever.

How the world changed
Twenty years after 9/11 in Economist covers

Sep 10th 2021

WILL ANYTHING ever be the same? In the days after 9/11, when all were stunned, it was clear the world had changed profoundly. Less obvious was just how far the geopolitical shockwaves would reach. In our first cover story after the assault we likened the moment to the attack on Pearl Harbour. Suspicion already pointed to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. We called for America, and its allies, to offer up a response that was not timid, but that remained “measured”.

‘As I stood at the window and watched smoke fill a cloudless blue sky, I could not have predicted the destruction around the world that would follow from that morning, but I knew enough to resist the American hubris of exceptionalism and nonsense about "the civilised world" in a struggle with bestial others. I knew enough to place 9/11 in the context of other gruesome crimes human beings visit on one another,’ says Siri Hustvedt, who was in Brooklyn during the 9/11 attacks.
‘The "war on terror", a massive mobilisation of power that would alter the American and international psycho-political landscape, was the catalyst for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and interventions in Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and Ethiopia … [This] "war" justified the Patriot Act, which increased surveillance and curtailed the civil rights of all US citizens, but the ongoing aura of emergency about foreign terror over two decades played an old xenophobic, racist melody.’

Two planned skyscrapers, a performing arts center and a church are still unfinished at the site, which plays host Saturday to the annual ceremony honoring nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks. https://to.pbs.org/3hk1lQS

  • About the Author

Liao Yiwu is a poet, novelist, and screenwriter. In 1989, he published an epic poem, "Massacre," that condemned the killings in Tiananmen Square and for which he spent four years in prison. His works include Testimonials and Report on China's Victims of Injustice. In 2003, he received a Human Rights Watch Hellman-Hammett Grant, and in 2007, he received a Freedom to Write Award from the Independent Chinese PEN Center. He lives in China.

Wen Huang is a writer and freelance journalist whose articles and translations have appeared in The Wall Street Journal Asia, the Chicago Tribune, the South China Morning Post, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Paris Review.

The Corpse Walker introduces us to regular men and women at the bottom of Chinese society, most of whom have been battered by life but have managed to retain their dignity: a professional mourner, a human trafficker, a public toilet manager, a leper, a grave robber, and a Falung Gong practitioner, among others. By asking challenging questions with respect and empathy, Liao Yiwu managed to get his subjects to talk openly and sometimes hilariously about their lives, desires, and vulnerabilities, creating a book that is an instance par excellence of what was once upon a time called “The New Journalism.” The Corpse Walker reveals a fascinating aspect of modern China, describing the lives of normal Chinese citizens in ways that constantly provoke and surprise.

Yiwu Liao──
