Richard M. McCarthy
McCarthy, Richard M.

I can’t remember how many times have I listened to this music, must be many from childhood till now, especially in my secondary school years. Yet, never have I been touched so deeply in this evening, when I helplessly think of the passing of John Berger. Over the last week I read so many articles by various people on Berger, on his life, his works, his political views, their encounters with him. Although many facts and praises are repeated, the thoughts on him must be unique to each individual. I look back at my old diaries, I find I have learned so much from him. I cited many words of his that inspire me, and I feel deeply grateful for his original thoughts. I haven’t read all his books, not even most, I still haven’t tried hard enough!

As for the music, it stirs up my emotion but I hope to appear strong, yet I couldn’t resist closing my eyes when listening… when the music ends, I no longer want to open my watery eyes, I suddenly feel that I cannot grasp anything about life, those who make me laugh and cry; the hope, anticipation, sometimes disappointment in day-to-day encounters; the vitality and death; the strength and fragility; the weight and lightness of being…

May I cite a passage written by Berger that I always love :

“We are both storytellers. Lying on our backs, we look up at the night sky. This is where stories began, under the aegis of that multitude of stars which at night filch certitudes and sometimes return them as faith. Those who first invented and then named the constellations were storytellers. Tracing an imaginary line between a cluster of stars gave them an image and an identity. The stars threaded on that line were like events threaded on a narrative. Imagining the constellations did not of course change the stars, nor did it change the black emptiness that surrounds them. What it changed was the way people read the night sky. The problem of time is like the darkness of the sky. Every event is inscribed in its own time. Events may cluster and their times overlap, but the time in common between events does not extend as law beyond the clustering.”

In life and others, there is always an end of it no matter how one hopes not, in reality and indeed, "and our faces, my heart, brief as photos", a beautiful book by John Berger (1926-2017)
