約十年前，我讀過書的英國Essex大學傳來一段信息，內容大約說: 以台灣的表現，學校考慮授名譽博士給傑出的台灣人。當時我認為我所認識的少數官員和學者，都缺乏有基本領域方面之成就而又對台英文化交流有功的。我放棄回報……

這一機會之流失，很可惜。

我認為，我們應該勇於推薦合宜的候選人給各大學和各頒獎單位之評審委員會，這樣既可促進其決選品質，或也可發揚某些人之潛德之光輝。

****講話摘要

約10年前，梁永安先生和張華先生等人已是譯林高手，我才與他們認識。因為我比較有空，所以在PC Home的新聞台(blog) “Simon University” ，就由我掛名主持，所以張華兄有時候就戲稱我為”校長”----那blog ，其實談許多中英譯中的一些小毛病，所以blog的主要參與者5人都是專家，只有我是外行，他們就教我敲鐘……..

今天是他兩人的喜日，我就用一些故事來賀喜……

張華兄在遠流的書中這樣介紹自己

資深工程師，從1980 年起，自習英中翻譯、參加Toastmasters International、蒐集愛麗絲資料迄今。台灣翻譯學學會終身會員、英國Institute of Linguistics授證翻譯師，曾獲金石堂英翻中比賽社會組首獎、梁實秋文學獎譯文組及譯詩組各第二名。業餘曾任《美國新聞與世界報導》中文版資深編 輯、《麥克米倫高級英漢雙解詞典》等四本英漢詞典編輯、為Toastmasters主持編譯十本中文版手冊、發表過英漢詞典、雙關語翻譯、愛麗絲與趙元任 等論述多篇，近年為《讀者文摘》中文版譯者。作品《挖開兔子洞》(2010)榮登誠品書店暢銷書排行榜。

張華兄是卡洛爾Lewis Carroll （1832-1898）作品專家和異代知音。他翻譯Lewis Carroll的 《挖開兔子洞：深入解讀愛麗絲漫遊奇境》(Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 2010)和《愛麗絲鏡中棋緣》(Through the Looking Glass And What Alice Found There 2011)是世界名著，其中妙語如珠，很有意思，所以廣為世人所引用。譬如說，我們可以用下一段話來打趣我們與某一群瘋子的奇緣：

• "But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
• "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
• "How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
• "You must be," said the Cat, "otherwise you wouldn't have come here." (From Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel,: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)

某一群瘋子是mad people的一般的翻譯，請對照下面的林語堂和胡適之先生的對話。

  林語堂《無所不談》* (台北：文星1966 ) 收入林先生1965年發表在《中央日報》的文章.其中《胡適之與辜鴻銘》 (pp.118-23) 基本上是轉載胡先生1935年的文章《記辜鴻銘》。林先生在文章前加注說：
" cranky Hsu, crazy Ku 應該譯為 「徐迂」、「顧顛」" (按：胡先生的《記辜鴻銘》用 「徐顛子」、「顧瘋子」) 林語堂的翻譯得 cranky之一義.不過可能跟他認識徐先生有觀  cranky, bicker, bickering, feud, watchdog, fractio...

張先生對於越南語潮州話和台語等語言，都很見解和洞識力。譬如說，我們這次的獎原本要採用中古語”譯業獎”，張先生認為這有點沉重 (現代社會上對”業”，不會想到企業的業，常想到"歷史共業"的業。

當時的贊詞如下，

汪永祺先生；開拓台灣在概率學、統計學、系統學、英文學習、散文等領域之翻譯有成。

梁永安先生：翻譯著作等身，豐富了台灣知識領域和思想境界，拓展了漢文的譯藝。

當時跟梁先生說，他翻譯出版超過一百本時，肯定會給他一筆比昔日新聞局的翻譯講多一元的獎金，以表崇高敬意。在梁先生日積月累的努力下，”業績”已達成，促進我們今天的聚會。對梁先生的贊詞，我在2008年已說過了，現在我舉今年(2013)請教他的兩篇。
