Overheard
Central bankers are used to doing a difficult job without necessarily getting much backing at home. But the Bank of England's Mervyn King seems to have it harder than most.

Talking at the Economic Club of New York on Monday, Mr. King took a question on Mark Carney, the Canadian central banker who will succeed him as governor of the Bank of England next year.

Mr. King said he was watching reports of Mr. Carney's appointment on the news with his wife, and she said: "You know Mervyn, they'll miss you, or six months down the road they'll miss you."

So far, so supportive. However, Mr. King recalled that his wife then looked at the screen again and had this to say on her husband's successor: "He's very young…he's immensely charming…and he's very charismatic. I think he'll do a great job, and they won't miss you at all."

At that point, amid much laughter from the audience, Roger Ferguson, chairman of the club, said Mr. King is charming and charismatic and would be missed. So Mr. King still has fans, even if he isn't king in his own castle.
