HC我最近到台北市立教育大學教授{戴明領導手冊}(The Leader Handbook),準備功課時重讀它和相關書籍,百感交集。
1993年五月,英國戴明協會(BDA)舉辦第六屆年會,Peter Scholtes 負責最後一小時的總結,後來將演講稿等整理出版小冊子(編號W4;屬BDA的世界系列),書名為Learning and Leadership。這本,後來編成 The Leader Handbook 的一部分,詳{戴明領導手冊} 。不過,現在讀 Learning and Leadership可以有點”身歷其境”的感受。這是整理成書之後無法體會的。書的(口語)序文(開場白)取名Preamble,都是較不常見的用法。 一開始說:The assignment was interesting: it was one hour with no title. Sort of an 007 topic. I have licence to kill, I guess.

小讀者:preamble 通常是放在”正式文件”前以述解正文之旨, 如美國獨立宣言, 憲法等在正文前都有這麼一個preamble. 他 (sic) 許{戴明領導手冊} 也是這個用意吧?

十年前,他是英國某在台MBA課程的在職學生。今天打電話給我,講話還是那麼元氣淋漓。

2015年2~3月,東海大學"校長"事件鬧得沸騰,楊金山兄當時從美國返校。
當時,我因為與美國的校友有諸多通信討論,當然也與金山兄討論,不管是他在東海校內的親身觀察或是回美國之後的關懷母校(他的通信都採用英國文).......
10月初,我發現楊金山兄有10萬美元的捐款 (之後校友會袁會長說,我看漏另外一筆5萬美元.......)
這回他參加畢業40周年、創校60周年的慶祝晚會,很可惜我缺席,不過,我們在社群網有些連絡,這都虧沈金標先生的照相:

Abstract

This is a moderate introduction to algebraic ideas and methods in logic. In the middle of the 19th century, G. Boole and A. de Morgan introduced algebraic methods into logic for the first time and attempted to express logical reasoning like algebraic calculation. Later de Morgan described Boole’s work as:

That the symbolic processes of algebra, invented as tools of numerical calculation, should be competent to express every act of thought, and to furnish the grammar and dictionary of an all containing system of logic, would not have been believed until it was proved.

Though semantics for nonclassical logics are mostly limited to algebraic ones until the end of the 1950s, relational semantics introduced by S. Kripke has taken the place of algebraic semantics and it became the main stream of semantics for nonclassical logics, in particular for modal logics and superintuitionistic logics. An apparent merit of Kripke semantics lies in the facts that it is much more intuitively understandable and philosophically persuasive than algebraic one, and also that it is mathematically more tractable since each Kripke frame consists of a quite simple structure, i.e. a set (of possible worlds) with binary (accessibility) relations.

Model theoretic approach based on Kripke semantics has made important and quite successful progresses in the latter half of the last century, but algebraic approach had not drawn much attention until the end of the 1980s. But recent developments of abstract algebraic logic and also of algebraic study of substructural logics reveal essential and sometimes surprising interconnections between logic and algebras. In my lectures, I will explain algebraic approach to logic and some important key concepts, like algebraization, residuation and algebraic proof theory, without assuming any particular knowledge of algebra nor going into technical details.
