Camino Real is a 1953 play by Tennessee Williams. In the introduction to the Penguin edition of the play, Williams directs the reader to use the Anglicized pronunciation "Cá-mino Réal." The play takes its title from its setting, alluded to El Camino Real, a dead-end place in a Spanish-speaking town surrounded by desert with sporadic transportation to the outside world. It is described by Williams as "nothing more nor less than my conception of the time and the world I live in."[1]
Kilroy, a young American visitor, fulfills some of the functions of the play's narrator, as does Gutman, (named after Sydney Greenstreet's character from The Maltese Falcon, but bearing more resemblance to Signor Ferrari, Greenstreet's character in Casablanca) manager of the hotel Siete Mares, whose terrace occupies part of the stage. Williams also employs a large cast of characters including many famous literary characters who appear in dream sequences. They include Don Quixote and his partner Sancho, Marguerite "Camille" Gautier (see The Lady of the Camellias), Casanova, Lord Byron, and Esmeralda (see The Hunchback of Notre Dame), and others.
Taking place in the main plaza, the play goes through a series of confusing and almost logic-defying events, including the revival of the Gypsy's daughter (Esmeralda)'s virginity and then the loss of it again. A main theme that the play deals with is coming to terms with the thought of growing older and possibly becoming irrelevant.

In 1946 Williams wrote an account of the origins of the play, in which he describes how he was visiting Mexico in 1945 and in a romantic, dreamy mood, when:

Lauren Lovette, the resident choreographer of Paul Taylor Dance Company, presents two new works as part of the group’s Lincoln Center season.
For Longo, the picnic was a revolutionary moment, bringing not only euphoria but an estimated 600 East Germans (in Hungary on “vacation”) across the border. “The scene was utter chaos,” Longo writes. “East Germans celebrating on the other side of the line; Hungarian officers in heated conversations; Austrians walking into Hungary, Hungarians crossing into Austria.” Three months later, the Berlin Wall fell. And in August 1991 — on the second anniversary of the picnic — a crew of revanchist putschists failed miserably in Moscow, speeding the demise of the Soviet Union.
Longo aims high: not only to revisit the field in Sopronpuszta, now “desolate” and “emptied” of history, but to tell us how we got “from tearing down the Berlin Wall to our new age of erecting barriers.”

穆索斯基（Modest Mussorgsky, 1839-1881）是俄國十九世紀末期的音樂奇才。他的歌劇《鮑里士 古得諾夫》是俄國歌劇中歷久彌新的傑作，他的鋼琴曲《展覽會之畫》更是膾炙人口，他的正規音樂訓練極為貧乏，而他「自學」出來的音樂創作與演奏才能，卻令人咋舌，雖然他酗酒成性。
根據俄國一位叫作布泰松（Sergei Bertensson）的回憶：
有一年的冬天，我製作了一個為醫學院學生募款的音樂會……
除了俄羅斯歌劇院現成的演唱者之外，我很幸運的請到了當時義大利歌劇院當紅的男高音拉菲利（Raveli），當時他正好在「波修瓦劇院」（Bolshoi Theatre）演唱……。
在演唱會的前一天，菲拉利告訴我，他希望與他的伴奏見面，並表示要先預練一次。當時我為他安排的伴奏是穆索斯基。
於是我在一天前通知穆索斯基，在得到他的同意之後，我興奮地向菲拉利確定這件事。我如此之興奮，是因為穆索斯基答應我時，完全清醒，未遭酒精「污染」的狀況下答應的。
第二天，也就是演出的當天早上，我到穆索斯基的家中，準備接他去預演時，我卻被他當時的情況嚇住了！他的情況以「酩酊大醉」都不夠形容。他用一種含糊不輕的語調告訴我，根本就不需要去義大利人那裡，演出的那一天一定會沒問題的，要我別擔心……。喔！他是用法文跟我說的。
我怎樣的哀求、勸說顯然都無效，他不斷的用法語跟我說，當然是語句不清的一再地說：
「不去，先生，不去。現在根本不可能去，放心！放心！今晚一定沒問題！」
在無計可施之下，我只好回到拉菲利那邊，告訴他我沒找到穆索斯基。
我也同時安排了一位朋友，請他嚴密的照顧穆索斯基，務必要讓穆索斯基在演奏會之前早兩個小時到達會場。而且下午務必要禁止他喝酒。那天晚上，穆索斯基上果然在七點鐘抵達了「科諾諾夫廳」（Kononov’s Hall）。只是穆索斯基依然爛醉如故！更糟的是，在貴賓休息室中備有多種美酒，原是為招待貴賓休息時用的，而穆索斯基卻一瓶又一瓶地在品嚐那些美酒！當然也因此越來越醉！
另一邊，我那位明星男高音拉菲利在發過聲後，突然告訴我，他今天的聲音不太對勁，要低半音唱所有的樂曲！
我的天哪，一個爛醉的神智不清，我正為他是否能正確彈奏而七上八下，另一個卻要求低半音唱！我的心往下沉了，一場荒腔走板的音樂會好像已無可避免了！但是，我仍抱著一絲希望走到穆索斯基那邊，問他是否能臨時把所有的歌曲伴奏都降下半個音彈奏。醉容可掬的穆索斯基從他的座位上站了起來，一下子容光四射，信心十足的看著我說：
「當然可以！」
仍然是用法語，他一向對「文化人」說法文的，即使是在爛醉之時！
他要求那位男高音立即跟他輕聲走一遍所有的曲目，以證明他的話。於是，他們在練習室中，開始了第一次的預演。穆索斯基與拉菲利是第一次見面，也從未聽過拉菲利的演唱。而穆索斯基卻能立即與拉菲利合作無間，隨便拉菲利要求高低一個調，穆索斯基都能立即「奉陪」，練習完了，拉菲利對這位顯然仍在酒神控制下的穆索斯基欽佩不已，情不自禁的擁抱著穆索斯基，並且不斷重複地說：
「好一個了不起的藝術家！」
