Howard Chang 補充："更"是明清時期計算海程之單位。 閩雜記：「海道不可以里計。行舟者以為更漏筒，如酒壺狀；中實細沙，懸之。沙從筒眼滲出，復以一筒承之；上筒沙盡、下筒沙滿， 則上下更換，謂之一更，每一日夜，共十更。然風潮有順逆、 駕駛有遲速，則以一人取木片由船首投海中，卽疾行至船尾， 木片與人俱到為準。或人行先到，則為『不上更』；或木片先到， 則為『過更』。計所差之尺寸，酌更數之多寡，便知所行遠近、 並知船到何處矣。以更數計陸路里數，每一更該陸路四十二里有零。 統計一日夜行船十更，可得陸路四百二十餘里也。」 臺灣小志記載：「島形自東北稍偏西南，統計南北約八百、東西約二 百六、七十里；『搢紳全書』載『臺灣南北二千八百里』者， 以路之曲折言之，非直徑也。」以臺灣南北縱長約395公里，東西 寬度最大約144公里之現代里程單換算，每一更路程約２１公里， 換算時速約為8.75公里
