Michael Hart said in 2004, "The mission of Project Gutenberg is simple: 'To encourage the creation and distribution of ebooks.'"[5]

As of April 2007, Project Gutenberg claimed over 21,000 items in its collection, with an average of over fifty new e-books being added each week.[3]

Project Gutenberg, abbreviated as PG, is a volunteer effort to digitize, archive, and distribute cultural works. Founded in 1971 by Michael Hart, it is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books.

Starting in 2004, an improved online catalog made Project Gutenberg content easier to browse, access, and link to. Project Gutenberg is now hosted by ibiblio at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill..

Sweden acts to preserve Bergman archive, films

The Swedish government has announced a donation of 20 million crowns ($3 million Cdn) to help preserve the films and scripts of the late director Ingmar Bergman.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Culture Minister Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth made the proclamation in a letter published Monday in the daily Dagens Nyheter.

"[Ingmar] Bergman has given Swedish stage art a unique position in the world. It deserves to be recognized … The rich output of films and television drama contributed by Bergman make up an important part of our cultural heritage," they wrote.

"It is important to ensure that [his] artistic heritage is managed and can provide inspiration to the audience of tomorrow."

Bergman, who died on July 30 at age 89 in his home on the Baltic Sea island of Faro, will be commemorated at Sweden's Royal Dramatic Theatre on Monday evening.

He was hailed by American director Woody Allen as "the greatest film artist of my lifetime."

The money would mainly cover films which the legendary auteur directed or wrote, as well as the purchase of copyrights and converting Bergman's scripts into digital form.

The letter noted the director's films were in high demand from festivals but there were too few copies of certain works and the quality in some cases was poor.

While the Ingmar Bergman Foundation keeps a vast private archive of Bergman's scripts, notes and photographs, the foundation lacks the resources to digitize the archive.

Considered one of the great masters of 20th century cinema, Bergman won numerous international awards, including Oscars for best foreign film for The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass Darkly and Fanny and Alexander.

For more than three decades he produced an average of a movie a year, including Wild Strawberries (1957), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1963), Scenes from a Marriage (1973), Autumn Sonata (1978) and Saraband (2003).

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - The Swedish government said Monday it would donate almost three million dollars (2.12 million euros) to preserve the works and memory of legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman who died in July.

The money will be used to host an annual international theatre festival organised by the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Bergman's honour and to make digital copies of his films.

The theatre will also be given funds to buy the rights to Bergman's works.

"It is important to ensure that Ingmar Bergman's artistic heritage is managed and can provide inspiration to the audience of tomorrow and the film and stage world of the future," Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Culture Minister Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth wrote in leading Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter announcing their initiative.

Bergman died at his home on the Baltic island of Faaroe on July 30 aged 89.

For many movie buffs, Bergman was the greatest of the authorial filmmakers of the 1950s and 1960s, alongside such figures as Federico Fellini, Luis Bunuel or Jean-Luc Godard.

For more than three decades he produced an average of a movie a year, including "Wild Strawberries" (1957), "The Virgin Spring" (1960), "Through a Glass Darkly" (1961), "Winter Light" (1963), "Scenes from a Marriage" (1973), "Autumn Sonata" (1978) and "Saraband" (2003).

On Monday, the Royal Dramatic Theatre and the government were to hold a memorial in Bergman's honour featuring many of his leading actors, including Lena Endre, Pernilla August and Boerje Ahlstedt.
