Happy Birthday to Ruth Adler Schnee, who turns 99 today! Based in Michigan, Schnee is best known for her textile designs, featuring bold color and abstract-patterns of organic and geometric forms. Throughout her more than 8 decade-long career, Schnee has broken new ground. In 1946, Schnee was one of the first women to receive an M.F.A degree in Design from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Soon afterwards, she set up her own design practice, and from 1949-1976 ran (in partnership with husband, Eddie) Adler-Schnee, a modern design store in Detroit. Ruth is the sole-surviving participant in a ground-breaking DIA exhibition, For Modern Living, which featured modern design for the home. Throughout her more than 8 decade-long career, Schnee also designed interior spaces for buildings by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Minoru Yamasaki. Schnee’s career revived in the 1990s, when she designed new textiles (and revived archival designs) for Anzea and Knoll Inc. In 2015, Schnee was named a Kresge Eminent Artist, a testament both to her 80-plus year design career and to her role as an advocate for Detroit's design legacy. Schnee moved to Colorado in 2019, but her heart remains in Metro Detroit. The DIA recently acquired, “Lazy Leaves,” a textile piece designed by Schnee in 1953.
