孔慧怡 《不帶感傷的回憶》2017的末尾,講一著名的"人生意義"比喻: Of Human Bondage, originally published in 1915 and considered Maugham’s masterpiece, is a semi-autobiographical work that follows the life of protagonist Philip Carey. Born with a club foot, this memorable character enters the world not only deformed, but an orphan. As an adult, he aspires to be an artist in Paris, and then a doctor in London, struggling with money and love. At one point, his friend, Cronshaw, points him toward the meaning of life:
“Have you ever been to the Cluny, the museum? There you will see Persian carpets of the most exquisite hue and of a pattern the beautiful intricacy of which delights and amazes the eye. In them you will see the mystery and the sensual beauty of the East, the roses of Hafiz and the wine-cup of Omar; but presently you will see more. You were asking just now what was the meaning of life. Go and look at those Persian carpets, and one of these days the answer will come to you.”
孔慧怡 《不帶感傷的回憶》Memories Unburdened By Sorrow 這本書是"香港"譯界的國際、本土親友之情誼 (多為故人了)記錄,感人。
作為香港人,當我們談到翻譯作為歷史見證文本時,自然想到英使來華的外交文件、不平等條約及殖民地報刊等譯文,西方與中國甚少接觸,而香港開埠一事,不單關係到中國近現代史之大變局,亦關乎中國文化重建知識體系,意義自是非凡。關詩珮對這方面抱有濃厚的興趣。作為土生土長的香港人,她自然無法割捨攸關我城過去被遺忘的一頁,這方面也關係到香港兩種語文的互動。她曾多次撰文討論英國漢學家威妥瑪(Sir Thomas Francis Wade)在訓練英國外交部學習中文及廣東話方面的貢獻,在〈翻譯政治及漢學知識的生產:威妥瑪與英國外交部的中國學生譯員計劃(1843-1870)〉(刊於《中央研究院近代史研究所集刊》第八十一期),關詩珮運用英國外交部及殖民地部的檔案文件,剖析威妥瑪當年如何運用自己的漢學知識改革英國外交部的中文翻譯課程、編製教材、招聘譯員,並參與教學工作等。
關詩珮作為翻譯界學者,梳理威妥瑪這一英國漢學家暨翻譯界先驅時,自是充滿景仰,但她也在文中指出,威妥瑪和另一位德裔翻譯家郭實臘(Carl Friedrich August Gützlaff,或譯郭士立)都心裏明白,翻譯攸關大英帝國在華的長遠利益。關詩珮筆下的英方翻譯人物,如第一次鴉片戰爭的英方翻譯費倫(Samuel T. Fearon,或譯飛即);從法庭傳譯搖身一變成為殖民地各方調停者、藉此牟取私利的雙面譯者高和爾(Daniel Richard Caldwell),在中國眼中不啻是殖民主義的幫兇和買辦,研究殖民地翻譯官的歷史似乎亦觸及到現今中國所不齒的歷史。
根據書中所述,但凡二十世紀七十年代在香港大學念翻譯的學生,都會知道D. C. Lau的名字,因為他的英譯《孟子》和原文一起高高列在一年級學生的書單中。戴着「知名學者」這頂光環,不免會被人當作是不苟言笑的嚴肅書生,然而,透過孔慧怡的文字紀錄,我們得以窺探鼎鼎大名的D. C. Lau鮮為人知的一面。例如他很喜歡跟別人說學術界的趣聞,其中一宗是這樣的:
第一年做三份工,孔慧怡忙到透不過氣,試過寫一首英文詩作投訴信給校長高錕,其中一句的意思是「我現在的時薪只比菲律賓傭人好一點點而已」(On an hourly basis I am paid/ just a little better than a Filipina maid)。校長看了那首詩,孔慧怡才開始「甩難」,學校減輕了她教學上的職務,她也為自己定下目標,在十年內完成已經開展的中國翻譯史研究,推動國際交流,然後在五十歲生日以前遞交辭職信。
