A breath of fresh air 🍂
Camille Pissarro died #OnThisDay in 1903. His painting of 'Fox Hill, Upper Norwood' is one of 12 surviving pictures that he painted while living in London from late 1870 to mid-1871. He and his family arrived in early December 1870 and settled briefly in the south London village.
The winter of his arrival was particularly cold, enabling Pissarro to continue painting the type of winter landscapes he had produced in France in the winter of 1868. 'Fox Hill, Upper Norwood' is perhaps the first picture he painted in London. One of the more rural scenes of the group, we see a simple road flanked by houses, chimney smoke merging with the clouds. Three people, two women and a man in a top hat with a walking stick, pass each other, their wintry attire matching the shrubbery and bare trees: https://bit.ly/353NAwu

🎂 Next month, the Nelson-Atkins turns 90. We're taking time each week to look back through the archives and reminisce about the museum's history and milestones. This week, let's revisit Rozzelle Court.
Rozzelle is an iconic feature of the Nelson-Atkins Building, where guests can relax and enjoy a meal between galleries. Despite the old-world charm, much about the space has changed since its grand opening.
The court is named after Frank F. Rozzelle, the Nelson family lawyer who bequested his estate to the museum upon his death in 1923. When the museum opened in 1933, Rozzelle was an open-air courtyard. Architect Thomas Wight intended it to be a soothing outdoor haven for guests, modeled on 15th century Italian architecture.
However, the extremes of Kansas City summers and winters meant that the courtyard was untenable for parts of the year. With funding from the Hall Educational Foundation, Rozzelle was enclosed in 1981 to make it more useable, to provide additional exhibition space, and to support better environmental conditions in the surrounding galleries.
Today, it's a guest favorite, and home to the esteemed Rozzelle Court Restaurant. Next time you visit, look up at the ceiling and imagine a Missouri sky — and thank goodness for HVAC.
The Nelson-Atkins is hosting 90th anniversary celebrations through December — including a free exhibition of archival materials, artist talks, drop-in activities, and more. See how you can celebrate with us: nelson-atkins.org/90th-anniversary-celebration
