André Leon Talley has been a fixture in the world of fashion for so long that it’s difficult to imagine a time when he wasn’t defining the boundaries of great style. Kate Novack’s intimate portrait, The Gospel According to André takes viewers on an emotional journey from André’s roots growing up in the segregated Jim Crow South to become one of the most influential tastemakers and fashion curators of our times. Novack’s film draws fascinating, heretofore unexplored connections, between the elegance of André’s beloved grandmother and the Black Church of his youth and his later iconic, barrier-breaking work at publications like Women’s Wear Daily, W and Vogue. Weaving together a wealth of archival footage from the most glamorous moments in fashion history with André’s poignant reflections on his life and career, The Gospel According to André is a cinematic monument to one of the most unique figures of 20th Century American culture. Produced by the team who brought viewers The First Monday in May and Page One: Inside The New York Times and featuring commentary from fashion luminaries including Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford, The Gospel According to André is an indispensable addition to the growing canon of fashion documentary.
Death and tributes[edit]
Talley died from complications of a heart attack and COVID-19 at a hospital in White Plains, New York, on January 18, 2022, at the age of 73.[59][60][61]
Talley's death elicited an outpouring of sympathy and tribute from many friends, admirers, and organizations. Vogue editor-in-chief, Dame Anna Wintour, wrote, "The loss of André is felt by so many of us today: the designers he enthusiastically cheered on every season, and who loved him for it; the generations he inspired to work in the industry, seeing a figure who broke boundaries while never forgetting where he started from; those who knew fashion, and Vogue, simply because of him".[62]
In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, his former America's Next Top Model colleague Tyra Banks stated, "I adored Andre. Before meeting him, I had never experienced such a prolific person serving up a rare mix of fashion 'fabulousness' and real down-home southern comfort love. Being in his presence was so magical. He made me smile, laugh and was a masterful teacher - a genius historian, scholar, colleague, effervescent spirit, legend…you are resting now, Dearest Andre. But your spirit, your je ne sais quoi, your iconic voice…I hear it now. And will forever. We all will."[63]
Michelle Obama posted, "André Leon Talley was a one-of-a-kind presence who changed the face of fashion and beauty for a generation of girls just like me. He will be missed, but I know his legacy will continue inspiring people for years to come".[64]
Other figures who have paid tribute to Talley include Mariah Carey, Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé,[65] Viola Davis, Diane von Fürstenberg,[66] Bette Midler, Kim Kardashian, Zendaya,[67] Oprah Winfrey,[68] Jeremy O. Harris, and Edward Enninful.[69]
His memoir, The Chiffon Trenches, topped Amazon's fashion best-sellers chart and sold out at several book stores following the news of his death.[70]
In the late 1980s, his flamboyant tastes and deep fashion knowledge caught the eye of Ms. Wintour, for whom Mr. Talley became adviser, friend and foil, a link to an older, more romantic, less corporate and less bottom-line-oriented age. He even advised Ms. Wintour on her Met Gala outfits.
“What I recall is that I was not so much his protector,” Ms. Wintour said in the documentary. “My fashion history is not so great, and his is impeccable, so I think I learned a lot from him.”
After “The Chiffon Trenches” was published, Mr. Talley fell out with Ms. Wintour, whom he accused of abandoning him. (In the memoir, he suggested that she had played a somewhat parasitic role in his life, feeding off this energy.)
